Bromo is located 85 kilometers from Surabaya. It could be accessed from Probolinggo or Malang. If the visitors take Malang access, they would go through desert and have a limited accommodation choice.
People usually wait and see the sunrise through Bromo gap from Gunung Pananjakan crater. Bromo is interesting because it’s an active volcano with 2.392 meters height above sea level.
Bromo is one of the best destinations of Indonesia for its beauty and cultural diversity. There is a lot of proper accommodation in Bromo. The visitors could watch Kesada ritual, melarung ceremonial of crops production, along the Bromo crater in Kesada month (month of Bromo’s people belief)
Tengger tribe believes that Bromo is a sacred mount. They held Yadnya Kasada ritual or Kasodo annually. Yadnya Kasada ritual takes place in a shrine under the Bromo’s foot on south and continues to the top of Bromo. The ritual held at midnight to dusk. It must be held at full moon.
Transportation
The transportation from Surabaya is very reachable. There are bunch of transportation either bus or leased car. Leasing a car in Surabaya is recommended for solo traveler. They can easily get it at the airport for about IDR 550.000 per day including the driver and the fuel. The estimate time arrival from Surabaya is 4 to 5 hours.
The visitors could also take public transportation. They can ride a “Damri” bus at the airport to Bungurasih bus station. It is free of charge. Then they need to find a bus to Bayu ANgga Probolinggo bus station.
From Probolinggo bus station, find a minibus to go to Cemoro Lawang. The minibus will not go before it carries enough people.
Bromo Trip
The visitors need to ride a jeep to go to Pananjakan hills. Private or leased car is not allowed. Visitors could reserve the jeep through home stay owner. For the record, if visitors go to Bromo on Kasada ritual (either on August or September), they need to reserve the jeep long before the D-Day.
The jeep schedule with normal route (home stay – Cemoro Lawang – Pananjakan – Bromo – homestay) is started at 3.30 AM – 8 AM. The jeep costs IDR 500.000 – IDR 800.000 for one jeep. One jeep could carry 5-6 people. The price is negotiable. The visitors have to pay additional fare for about IDR 100.000 – IDR 150.000 if they want to go to savanna and Teletubbies hill.
Remember!
The weather in Bromo is extremely cold at dusk. Do not forget to wear sweater, coat, gloves, socks, beanies, shoes (do not use flip flop), trousers, and ear warm.
