SURYA.co.id | SURABAYA - Surabaya government has taken over Kalisosok Prison, a cultural heritage building of PT Fairco Jaya Dwipa, for many years.

The Mayor of Surabaya, Risma, are dreaming to restore the building.

She doesn’t want to restore this building as it used to be, a prison. Risma intends to make this place as a tourist attraction and public facilities as well.

The government was not the only active buyer of the former prison Kalisosok. In 2013, there was an investor who made an offer.

Agus said that the investor also exposed a new concept of the former prison Kalisosok. They equipped their explanation with the pre-design of Kalisosok.

The investor made an offer with the owner soon after they heard that the government were going to construct mass rapid transit.

However, the investor’s offer was not followed up by the Mayor because she wrote off the draft which was submitted by Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Kota Surabaya (City Development Planning Board of Surabaya).

According to Agus, the government planned that the creepy the formes prison will be turned into a historical tourism, that is a museum with war historical stuff in it. The outdoor design wouldn’t be changed for its status as a cultural heritage.

This building has a great characteristic and correlation with the freedom fighter and heroes. The former prison Kalisosok was the VOC fortress, then it was turned into a prison by Daendels.

Some Indonesian heroes and independence figures were their prisoners including WR Soepratman (the songwriter of Indonesia Raya), KH Mas Mansur, KH Hasyim Asyari (the leader of Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah or Muhammadiyah organization). They were locked up and tortured in this place.

Besides the museum, this place will be turned into MRT depot and playground for people of the southern part of Surabaya. There will be UMKM (Usaha Mikro, Kecil dan Menengah or Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) center.
